Ken Gold Biography

I was born and raised in Southern California. I am a self-taught artist, having never attended art school. My academic career was in Zoology and Animal Behavior and I have worked as a curator, scientist, zoologist, behaviorist and animal welfare specialist.

I developed an interest in photography at a young age, and while I have had no formal art education, I trained myself in black and white darkroom and hand-colored photography techniques. With the availability of digital photography expanding, I adopted this medium to handprint black and white and color photographs.

While some of my photographs remain true to their subject, others are manipulated on the computer and become more abstract, with little resemblence to the original photograph. I have also taught myself painting techniques and in addition to photography am currently creating art using the ancient art of encaustic painting.

I have traveled extensively throughout the US, Latin America, Europe and Asia, and always have a camera ready to photograph animals, nature, people and architecture. I have lived in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, The Netherlands, Singapore and Berlin, and currently reside in Chicago.

My work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in the Chicago area as well as in Los Angeles and New York. In the summer of 2002 I completed a mural as part of the Hubbard Street Mural Project in Chicago. Some of my more conventional photographs are also on permanent display in zoos in the U.S. and Europe.
